Former Havering councillor and now guardian and champion of the newly formed Romford Civic Society, Andrew Curtin has already found a worthwhile cause to go into battle against.

Said Andrew:

‘Just a quick note to let you know that what is, in my opinion, the real planning nasty in North Street (the block where Taylors Butchers is) is up for debate again at the Council’ Regulatory Services Committee this Thursday, 29th January, 7.30pm.  It is a particularly concerning proposal, as the building forms the context for important listed buildings at the Golden Lion, St. Edward’s Church etc., and if you take away the context of those buildings you lessen them as well.  Because of this, Havering’s planning policy specifically states that the building currently on this site should not be demolished…………. Cllrs have deferred this application 3 times now, after I’ve argued against in on every occasion, so I’ll troop along to fight the good fight again on Thursday.

‘I understand that it is likely to be a long meeting as there’s lots on the agenda, and it’s short notice, but I thought I’d mention it just in case.

‘The same arguments which some Cllrs seem to use to suggest that this application should be allowed were used at the Woolpack (used to be Secrets) in the High Street, the lovely little terrace of Victorian shops opposite them, Quadrant Arcade, and elsewhere, and look at them now – all restored or being restored, so it can be done.’
